NEVER EASY.

Here we were, in her  room, on her bed, cuddled up under her blancket…cozy. We were watching “The Wedding Ringer”, enjoying the wedding steps, laughing hard at the stupidity of some scenes, with the rain outside giving sweet background sounds. Lara excused herself to go to the ladies. I stayed on the bed, smiling stupidly at the paused face of Kevin Hart (that guy is comedy whether in ‘play’ or ‘pause’).

I heard her come back into the room but instead of joining me on the bed, she sat on the rug, looking up at me. I looked at her and saw tears gathering in her eyes.

“Dipo, I’m sorry…”.

Now, no man sees his lady in that state, hears those words and doesn’t have his heart in gallops.

“Babe, for what? We were just…”

“You know you mean a lot to me, but, I… I just can’t go on with this”. Then she starts crying. (Why did she have to add that? I mean, I was already broken).

Believe me, I tried to talk her out of it, I tried to convince her that she was over reacting. Oh, I begged her, I hugged her, holding on like she was my life-line, cos she was. But, she was sure;

“Let it then be our parting

You are not staying

But don’t hold on to me

Else you hurt more than me

I am ready.”   (#peo)

…I have heard, watched and seen all sorts of breakup lines and scenes. Some were so sweet, one would think it was a proposal. Sadly, breakups ARE breakups and when you are faced with one, real life, even the most sugar coated, chocolate jammed words can’t lessen the hurt. This is especially true of sudden breakups, those whirlwinds from the pit of hell. One minute, you are smiling with potential husby or wifey, next minute, you look like an advert for tissue paper or kleenex (for the tush ones).

I am told the recipient is hit the most during breakups and i really cannot argue. So, for potential breakup donors;

1. Let there be actual reasons for it

2. Choose a private place. Don’t go and do that in the mall. Please.

3. Do not use that line. “It’s not you, it’s me”. Biko (please), that line died years ago and we have even stopped memorial services for it.

4. Don’t walk out after the ‘bomb’…unless the recipient asks you to. And unless the breakup came with a lot of anger and you wouldn’t want to break things.

Dear recipient, learn from your mistakes. Move on.
